More kids in Britain now have their own Internet access
According to recently released figures a rising number of children in Great Britain are now enjoying the luxury of having their own internet access in their bedrooms.
In years gone by having any form of broadband access in the home was considered to be a luxury. However, greater access to broadband coupled with increasingly affordable prices have led to more and more households having broadband connections over recent years, and according to one recent report has led to an increase in the children of Britain who have their very own Internet access in their bedrooms.
The UK’s communications regulator Ofcom recently released the report, which was entitled the UK Children’s Media Literacy Report. Figures in the report suggested that around thirty percent of children aged between twelve and fifteen years now had their own broadband connections in their bedrooms, which reflected an increase of over ten percent compared to a study carried out in 2007 amongst children in the same age groups.
There is also concern with regards to these children being able to go online without supervision because they have their own broadband service in their own rooms, and the Ofcom report stated that most of those that had their own internet access went online without any form of adult supervision.
The report also showed that twenty five percent of those with their own connections were failing to take even basic security precautions when going online, and the problem could become more prevalent when the government’s broadband for all plan comes to fruition. The regulator is now publishing a report to encourage and help parents to talk to their kids about safety whilst online.
