Blocking abuse images to be spread through new Watchdog International office
To help the latest moves to block the use of obscene images that can be access over broadband internet connections, the first European offices for Watchdog International has now been opened.
The appointment of country manager has been given to Peter Milford who will now be running the newly opened office. The role previously held by Mr Milford was with NewNet, a medium sized broadband ISP, in which he provided guidance as well as compliance advice for any legal responses and notifications at the company.
The management and education of large-scale trans-national project, which includes many different institutions in a number of European countries, are also areas that he has a great deal of experience in.
So far the introduction of systems that prevent users from accessing illegal material containing child sexual abuse has been carried out by less than 45 ISPs in the UK according to recent research by Watchdog International on the deployment of filtering services. This means that the ISPs without such systems set up number at more than 400.
The implementation of filtering systems that block illegal content access within the workplace has only been carried out by 7 percent of the 150 ISPs that specialise in providing broadband internet services to businesses it was also claimed.
In a recent comment Mr Milford advised “To date the UK internet industry has had an excellent track record of fighting illegal content on the internet, exemplified by the establishment of the Internet Watch Foundation. We must now learn lessons from the excellent work that New Zealand has undertaken to combat the distribution of child sexual abuse images on the internet. The New Zealand implementation does not distinguish between business or residential connections as participating ISPs filter all connections.”
