A recent report has shown that there are now nearly two million more Brits online than there were a year ago, and many of them are what have become known as ‘silver surfers’.

The rising number of broadband connections, stemming from increased access and affordability, has seen more and more people get online over recent years. According to recent reports there are nearly two million Brits now online compared to a year ago, showing how more and more people are finding broadband and internet access to be an essential part of life these days.

Furthermore it is claimed that over fifty percent of those that have got online over the past year are so called ‘silver surfers’ who are aged over fifty. The figures were released by the UK Online Measurement Company, and showed that the majority of the nearly two million new additions to the internet were over fifty and more were male than female.

One official from UKOM said: “The internet is getting older in more ways than one. Not only is the medium itself maturing but the audience is shifting towards older age groups. There is a still a perception that the net is youth-centric but this is clearly not the reality.”

Officials have said that older consumers are now using the inte3rnet for a wide range of purposes, and are finding it invaluable in their day to day lives. Many use the internet to read up on news, enjoy some entertainment, and shop whereas many others use it to manage their finances, save money on various bills, goods, and services, and even access government services.
