Local businesses and MPs demand faster broadband services in Lincolnshire

Aug 5 2009 / By Richard Patterson

It has been found that broadband services in the mainly flat areas of Lincolnshire range from poor quality to completely unavailable with this large region having a number of remote communities scattered throughout.

Although much of Lincolnshire is flat and many would think that high-speed broadband would have been available everywhere this is far from the case and the large number of remote users spread across the area appears to have made offering quality broadband services a difficult proposition for most internet service providers.

This has led to estimates of tens of thousands of pounds being lost by many of the businesses in the area due to either very slow or poor broadband service availability and is an issue that a group of MPs have taken up, calling for larger investment to be made in the region.

A significant number of complaints from local businesses regarding speeds and connections over broadband have been received by MPs, according to the local press website thisislincolnshire.co.uk.

Problems with market products or services, buying, selling and the ability to send or receive emails are just a few of the problems that have been raised by the local companies.

The region is said to have been held back so far by inadequate broadband services, which means that it is unlikely that companies will consider moving to the area.

With the recent release of the digital Britain report, which said that the Government would focus on both underserved and unserved area as part of its promise for universal broadband access through the UK, it is likely that the MPs will be looking for government support to improve services in Lincolnshire.

The other alternative is to follow the increasingly popular lead of other areas of the UK in seeking private sector support and building a community owned broadband network in the region.
