Legislation needed to aid high speed broadband in rural areas
A broadband industry expert has stated recently that in order for high speed broadband in rural areas in the UK to become a reality it is necessary for the government to intervene.
In a recent report a broadband industry official has said that in order for high speed broadband in rural parts of the UK to become a reality the government has to get involved and the help of legislation will be needed. Rowland O’Connor stated that the help of the government will be necessary in order to make sure that rural and faraway regions of the UK are able to get next generation broadband services.
He pointed out that the former Labour government had spent a lot of time talking about the roll out of high speed broadband in rural parts of the UK in order to bridge the gap between broadband access in rural and urban areas. However, he said that despite all of the talk access to adequate broadband speeds in these areas was still very limited.
O’Connor said that despite the fact that it was now 2010 many parts of the countryside and other faraway areas of the UK still did not have access to even 2Mbps broadband speeds. This is something that has been highlighted as a serious concern in terms of its impact on business and residents in these areas.
O’Connor said that centralised legislation was needed in order to ensure the delivery of adequate broadband services in these areas, stating: “Without centralised legislation, broadband for rural communities simply cannot be delivered in any significant way.”
