A new online provider of movies is now promising high speed streaming of HD video than will run on a standard broadband connections, with much of its content available free of charge.

The offer of HD video streaming to users with standard broadband connection without the usual high buffering times is something that is being promised by FilmOn, the online movie provider.

It has claimed to have reduced the huge footprint that are normally associated with HD videos down to as little as 2Mbps with the implementation of a new technique of compression for video called HDi. The claims that it can use this technique to play “HD-quality” films on standard broadband connection by streaming them in real time instead of using the advance data caching process normally found, although no explanation has been given as to how they have achieved this.

With around 70 percent of the movie available on this service at no charge,  FilmOn noted that the service is currently emphasizing on its free content. This free content is currently helped by Amazon Web Service, which streams the need to host content directly, and prices being offset by private finance, or the majority of the free content would be budget titles.

According to Alki David, the founder of the company, the viewing of most of this content should be available from more than one country. The current expectation is that FilmOn is expected to offer both the UK and the US access to this content, unlike similar services like Hula that currently restrict access to content only to this living in the country of origin. The inclusion of major movies like No Country for Old Men will be made available as “premium” paid content with UK prices expected to allow 24 hour streaming access for £4 ($5.92) or the full movie download at £5 ($7.40).
