Jersey residents get access to super-fast broadband

Some of the lucky residents of Jersey are now enjoying broadband speeds that are second only to South Korea thanks to the 1GB fibre broadband service from Jersey Telecom.

It has been reported that a number of homes in Jersey are now able to access super-fast broadband services, which provide residential broadband speeds that are second only to those found in South Korea. The speeds that these homes are now receiving are up to fifty times faster than they were previously, enabling households to benefit from high speed, high quality broadband services.

The homes that have been the first to receive the new high speed service are those in the Castle Quay development in St Helier, Jersey. The company behind the high speed service is Jersey Telecom, which is government owned, and according to reports forty million pounds will be spent over the next few years on broadband improvements.

Graeme Miller, chief executive officer at Jersey Telecom, said: “We don’t think anyone else is doing this at the moment. One of the most difficult things is demonstrating the speed because we have not been able to find any commercial sites that provide a gigabit link that people can use.”

At present the high speed internet service is still being trialled, and therefore Jersey Telecom was unable to confirm how much the service would cost consumers in the future. However, the company did indicate that consumers could be looking at a price of around one hundred pounds a month for a connection of 1GB.
