Is the government doing enough to support Digital Britain?

Many IT decision makers believe that the government is not doing enough to support Digital Britain according to a recent survey, with many showing support for net neutrality.

A recent survey has revealed the thoughts of IT decision makers when it comes to how the government is supporting Digital Britain as well as when it comes to net neutrality. The survey was carried out by the UK’s oldest, independent business ISP Powernet.

Just over one third of IT professionals that were polled as part of the study said that the government was failing to do enough to support Digital Britain, with many continuing to express concerns about broadband and internet speed. Around seventy seven percent said that a reliable broadband connection was vital to the future of their business but twenty seven percent said that the government appeared to be confused with regards to how to deliver faster broadband.

With regards to net neutrality only nineteen percent of those polled thought that Internet service providers should be allowed to tier internet access, and only seventeen percent said that they would be prepared to pay for top tier access. Forty percent said that this would affect fair access to the internet with thirty five percent adding that it would stifle innovation.

Tony Tugulu, Powernet’s CEO, said: “This research represents a blow to those who support the two tier internet and reveals a groundswell of support for net neutrality amongst the IT community. Broadband is the lifeblood of British businesses, but there is a real concern that the UK is lagging behind the rest of the world. UK businesses think the government should be doing more to help boost our digital infrastructure and they are also clear that tiering Internet access isn’t the answer. It’s time for the government and ISPs to come together and put together a plan that will help move the country into the digital fast lane as quickly as possible.”

Do you think that tiered access will stifle innovation in the UK?
