Impressive fixed line broadband ranking for UK

A recent study has shown that the UK is ranking high on the league tables when it comes to the take up of fixed line broadband, coming in number five on the league table.

On a variety of broadband related league tables that have been released recently the UK has ranked fairly badly, and this includes tables relating to areas such as broadband speeds and customer service levels. However, when it comes to the take up of fixed line broadband the UK is faring well, and has come at position five on the fixed line broadband league tables.

The report was released by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Thirty three countries were ranked as part of the study, and when it came to fixed line broadband connections the UK ranking fifth, beaten only by the United States, Japan, Germany and France.

The report also showed that the popularity of fibre based broadband continues to grow, and in the UK this technology has been boosted by the fact that Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, has demanded that communications and broadband giant BT opens its fibre broadband network to rival providers, which will increase competition, affordability, and access for consumers.

BT has already started rolling out its fibre based broadband service, and plans to provide speeds of up to 100Mbps to two thirds of homes by 2015. Another broadband giant in the UK, Virgin Media, has already rolled out its 100Mbps in some parts of the country, and will continue with this rollout, giving consumers even better access to high speed broadband.
