High speed broadband rolled out faster if users were willing to pay more

An industry official has claimed recently that firms would be far more willing and able to roll out high speed broadband if consumers were willing to pay more money for access to this improved technology.

The issue of broadband speeds in the UK has become increasingly important in the UK, as more and more people have started using their broadband services for streaming data and online gaming, and businesses have become keen to build on their success with the help of technology such as higher speed broadband, particularly following the damage that the recession may have caused to them.

One industry official has recently claimed that Internet Service Providers in the UK would be far more willing to roll out high speed broadband if they knew that customers would be happy to pay the extra money for access to this higher speed access. He said that willingness amongst users to pay higher prices for this access could result in ISPs rolling out the technology more quickly.

He explained: “If the UK decides it wants faster broadband and is willing to pay extra, perhaps £10 a month more, then firms would be keener to roll it out.” However, he also added that if the calls for the availability of high speed broadband at the lowest possible prices continued “then we can only expect firms to deploy low-cost style solutions”.

His comments came following reports that the European Commission wanted at least fifty percent of homes connected to high speed broadband by 2015 and one hundred percent of homes to have access by 2020. Another recent report claimed that a large number of broadband users would be happy to pay higher prices for higher speed broadband access.
