Google musing on potential fiber network for Europe
When one hears the word “Google,” images of the search engine’s colorful logo immediately pops up. Rather, even the words “search engine” just somehow enter your consciousness, and that’s because Google has managed to successfully market their brand and push it all across the market. That, plus their search engine is really far superior compared to others, in my opinion (and in the opinions of hundreds of millions of other people who rely on Google to get their searches done right.)

Google began as a simple project between two PhD students, but it grew to become the world’s premier search engine. Google eventually expanded their horizons to become a multinational public corporation with investments in cloud computing technology and advertising services. It was also revealed that Google plans to launch their own music store within the fourth quarter of this year. The company also just recently unveiled the Galaxy Nexus smartphone and the updated Android OS dubbed as Ice Cream Sandwich. And right now, amid all of Google’s other ventures, the giant has its sights set on establishing a potential fiber network in Europe.
This doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as Google has already had experience in building networks when they built a gigabit fiber infrastructure in the United States. This was revealed by David Drummond, who is a senior vice president of Google. It was reported that Drummond expressed that Google was “looking very closely” at a potential project in Europe, although specifics such as dates and locations were not given.
Google’s efforts at building better broadband infrastructure stems from the desire to further the company’s other business ventures. The company is also seeking to gain a better understanding on what people and businesses will do with more bandwidth and faster broadband access. Google is also looking to provide a new business model and cost projection for fibre network deployments, a process that might push providers into lowering their rates and offering much cheaper services.
It is noteworthy that some of world’s most advanced broadband technology is located in various countries in Europe, such as the Netherlands and key areas in Scandinavia, where fiber is already deployed to homes.
