An official from the games industry has said that faster broadband speeds are necessary in the UK, and that the 2Mbps plans from the government are not sufficient.

An official from the gaming industry has recently spoken out about broadband speeds across the UK, stating that faster speeds need to be made available across the UK. He also said that the 2Mbps service that was planned by the government as part of its universal broadband initiative was not sufficient, and that the government needed to do more to ensure that faster speeds were available in the UK.

The Vice President for Europe at Electronic Arts, Keith Ramsdale, said that the plans that have been launched by the government to provider universal broadband access with speeds of 2Mbps are not good enough. He said that ensuring faster speeds were made available across the UK would help to make sure that there was strong growth for both the packaged and the online gaming industry.

He said that the government needed to be more ambitious when it came to the broadband speeds that would be provided as part of its universal broadband initiative, stating: “Getting 2Mbps by 2012 is not quite ambitious enough. The broadband pipe needs to be a whole lot thicker and faster.”

Another gamin industry official said that the rest of the world was catching up with games developers in the UK, and that the government needed to recognise how valuable online gaming could be to the economy. The officials are concerned that the gaming industry in the UK could be adversely affected if the issue is not addressed.
