Free online training scheme to be launched by government
The government has already announced its plans to increase access to broadband across the UK, and is now pushing to improve IT skills amongst consumers with the launch of a new online training scheme.
As outlined in the Digital Britain Report the government in the UK is keen to roll out high speed broadband across the UK, including to remote areas where access has historically been poor. It appears that the government is also keen to improve IT skills amongst consumers in the UK, and with this in mind has launched a free online training scheme for those that need to improve their IT skills.
The new programme is called the Online Basics Scheme and is designed for those with a poor knowledge of the Internet and IT as a whole. The programme will involve a number of free online short courses that will help participants to improve their IT skills and knowledge and make the most of access to the Internet and computers.
The scheme has been launched following the results of research that was carried out by the government last year, the results of which showed that over eleven million people in Britain were classed as computer illiterate. With computers and the Internet playing such a big part in our day to day lives the government believes that there is a lot to be gained for those that are not familiar with IT by undertaking these courses.
The government has also taken into account that not all those that need to take these free courses will have access to computers within the home, and have subsequently set up online centres in various areas including London, Oldham, Devon, Gloucester, and Barnsley.
