Free broadband access for many residents in Hampshire
According to a recent report thousands of lucky residents in the Hampshire area are set to get free access to wireless broadband as part of a new initiative.
It has been revealed that thousands of lucky residents living in the Hampshire area are to get totally free access to broadband via a WiFi connection, as part of an initiative to provide people in more deprived areas with access to the Internet. It is thought that around ten thousand homes in Leigh Park, Hampshire will be able to benefit from the free WiFi access from next month.
The E-Learning Foundation has awarded a fifty thousand pound grant to make the project possible, and the aim of the process is to provide kids in more deprived areas with access to computers and the internet. Already antennae have been fitted at Staunton Community Sports College and Park Community School, and the launch is scheduled for September.
The company running the network is 5Miles Communications, and an official from the firm stated: ‘It all started when local schools wanted laptops for pupils to use at home but then the question came up ‘how will they access the internet?’ There was no point having computers if they could not afford to have the internet at home. This is a chance to educate people. Not only will it help students with their homework but it will have a wealth of education resources, for adult and family learning.’
One sixteen year old student from the area summed up the project, stating: ‘It’s a brilliant idea. Sometimes at school people had to stay on late to do their homework because they didn’t have the internet at home. This will be much more convenient.’
