Forty six communities receive free WiFi in competition
Following a competition forty six community groups have won free WiFi for a minimum of three years from the competition’s runner Freerunner.
It has been reported that following a competition that was launched by the WiFi hotspot company Freerunner forty six communities have been given free WiFi access for a minimum of three years. The lucky winners come from various places, ranging from the Orkney Islands to South Cornwall, and will benefit from free WiFi access for at least several years as a result of the competition.
The winners are a diverse variety of community groups ranging from unemployment groups and mother and toddler groups to youth clubs and more. Many of them are located in remote areas where accessing broadband can be difficult, but with the free WiFi access that the groups will be given accessing broadband and getting onto the Internet will be made far easier for these groups.
An official from Freerunner said: “The Freerunner mission is to give everyone free access to fast wi-fi whether you are in a coffee shop in the West End of London or a community centre in the suburbs of Newcastle.” He added: “It is incredible to think that a small piece of relatively low cost technology is going to fundamentally change nearly 50 communities across the UK.”
One official from a winning group in the Black Country said: “Many people in our area have never been online and know little about IT. Wi-fi means we can set up new internet-enabled computers allowing us to run more …courses, improving the employment prospects of people across the region.”
