Like other towns in the North Yorkshire province, Filey too is getting high speed broadband connections, with BT deciding to extend their super-fast plan throughout the town. The announcement of the plan came from BT back in September, and the service was introduced in Filey on Tuesday. The residents in the town were demanding the deployment of the super- speed service from several months before.

The super speed plan from BT enables its users to download files at a speed of 20 Mbps, which is two times the speed previously available from the providers. The users get only one- third of the proclaimed speed. However, Filey became one among the 20 other districts in North Yorkshire to get access to super fast broadband.

During this week, seven towns and villages, including Filey, got their network upgraded to super fast access. Now, about 39,000 homes and businesses are permitted to use high speed broadband throughout North Yorkshire region.

Introduction of super fast internet is equally beneficial to homes and businesses. It will allow faster download and huge exposure to international market, which would enhance productivity and efficiency.

“This is an important step forward for North Yorkshire” said John Anderson, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and Humber. He continued, “In these challenging economic times, faster broadband can help businesses become more competitive, find new customers and work more flexibly as well as greatly improving the online services available to families, home workers and other internet users.”

Anderson expects that 86 percent of the households and business firms in the region would get high speed connection by this summer. BT has a fund of £2.5 exclusively for the fibre- based broadband, which is sufficient to bring two- third of the UK under super fast internet by 2014.

BT is committed to extend the super speed service to geographically isolated and commercially challenging regions, with the participation of public sector enterprises.
