Faster speeds and affordability in the pipeline for broadband users in Guernsey

It has been announced that residents and businesses in Guernsey could be set to receive faster broadband speeds and greater affordability when it comes to their broadband services.

There are a number of key issues and elements that both consumers and businesses look at when taking on a broadband service, and two of the most important things that people tend to look at is the speed of the broadband service and the cost of the package. It is these factors, amongst others, that help users to determine which broadband service or package, and which Internet provider, will best suit their needs and pockets.

There has recently been some good news for residents and businesses in Guernsey with regards to both broadband speeds and the cost of services. Cable and Wireless Guernsey has announced plans to double the speed of broadband services for those in the area, and this is something that it hopes to implement from the start of May.

In 2008 residents and businesses in Guernsey had their broadband speeds from 1Mbps to 2Mbps by the island’s broadband network. Cable and Wireless have now said that speeds of 2Mbps and 4Mbps would now double, and in addition to this the cost of 8Mbps service would see a thirty seven percent drop in the wholesale cost, although the cost to users would depend on which Internet service provider they choose.

An official from the company stated: “Some homes do struggle to get maximum broadband speeds due to the distance from an exchange, or due to the wiring in the house. It’s for these reasons that not all lines will achieve the full headline speed of 4Mb or 8Mb; the service is an ‘Up to’ service, being the maximum speed that the line can achieve.”
