Faster broadband is needed in Ireland

Jul 6 2009 / By Rob Webber

The deployment of super-fast broadband services throughout Ireland is absolutely essential according to the head of a leading broadband service provider.

A whole range of different sectors would be boosted by an increased investment into new next-generation broadband technologies and links with the UK would also be developed with the improvements to connectivity this new technology would provide according to the Chief executive officer at Magnet, Mark Kellett.

The provision of more easily streamed media online and more simplistic VoIP hardware over a number of systems in a household will come with the implementation of new fibre optic technology. This advanced technology would also allow both residential and commercial users to benefit from a huge number of other options to improve both their home and business lives.

“Are we going to be the number one location for software development or games development? Or how about financial services? Well, guess what, we will be none of those things unless we have the infrastructure to support those industries,” said Mr Kellett.

At a cost of around €30 million (£25.7 million) the project Kelvin scheme that is currently being planned will provide a connection between Ireland and North America through a cable running 24 000km under the Atlantic Ocean.

With investment in the UK being carried out by both BT and Virgin Media it is hoped that telecoms companies in Ireland will follow the same path.

The overall cost of implementing the rollout of a high-speeds fibre optic broadband network all over Ireland is likely to be slightly less expensive than it would in the UK but it will still be a costly enterprise and will require substantial funding from both the government and possibly the private sector in order for these services to be rolled out.
