Facebook teams up with Skype hot on the heels of Google+

Hot on the heels of the launch of Google+, which is a rival to Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg’s social networking site has teamed up with Skype.

Millions of broadband users who enjoy social networking facilities and are big fans of Facebook will be delighted to hear that Facebook has teamed up with Skype, enabling users to enjoy video chat as part of their social networking experience on Facebook. This comes hot on the heels of the launch of Google+, which is a rival for Facebook.

Officials have said that the move will not only please consumers who will be able to enjoy this new Facebook facility but will also delight advertisers who are keen to see people stay on Facebook for long periods of time – which is something that this new facility will encourage users to do.

Susan Etlinger of the Altimeter Group, said: “Advertisers love anything that keeps users on Facebook for longer and that is something Facebook has been brilliant at – keeping people engaged with the platform for increasingly longer periods of time. It stands to reason that the longer you are on Facebook, the happier advertisers will be.”

One official said that Facebook and Google+ would be compared to one another over the coming year, stating: “The two companies built these products separately and independently over a number of months but they will be compared directly. They are going to be in more heated competition in the next year or so and you are going to hear a lot about who is going to win the social networking war – how does Google catch up, how does Facebook respond. This story isn’t going away.”
