A report has been released by the European Commission recently calling on member states to develop plans for the development of infrastructure that will allow for affordable superfast broadband by 2020.

The European Commission has recently released a report that calls on its member states to ensure that they put some sort of plan together with regards to the development of broadband infrastructure, as it wants all member states to be able to provide low cost, high speed broadband services by 2020.

The European Commission has released its Europe 2020 strategy, and as part of this strategy it wants to provide all Europeans with access to basic broadband services by 2013, and all Europeans with access to broadband services of at least 30Mbps within the next decade.

The ambitious plans of the European Commission will not come cheap, and according to reports reaching these milestones could cost up to two hundred and twenty eight billion pounds. However, there may be ways of cutting the costs through taking measure such as involving local authorities in joint ventures.

In addition to outlining what it wants for consumers in Europe over the next decade the European Commission has also highlighted the importance of wireless broadband technology. In its report it stated that it wanted a greater number of providers to start using wireless broadband technology in order to provide cheaper, faster broadband to consumers and business users. All of the new proposals that have been outlined in the report form part of the Commission’s Digital Agenda, which was launched earlier this year.
