Endemol may use take up of broadband to take Big Brother online

Over the past decade the UK has become used to watching the antics of complete strangers on television thanks to the channel 4 series, Big Brother. However, it has recently been reported that the show is to be axed by channel 4, and according to reports the production company is considering taking the show online thanks to the increased take up of broadband.

Jade Goody, Craig Phillips, Kate Lawler – these are just a few of the names that have become household names in the UK thanks to the channel 4 series Big Brother, which has been running for nearly a decade now. However, since the show began viewing levels have plummeted, and it was recently announced by Channel 4 officials that after a final series for 2010 the show is to be axed.

Whilst there are still a couple of millions viewers that tune in to the show faithfully each year the numbers have plunged since the first few series of the show, and Channel 4, like other television companies, has to be careful with funding, and so has decided that after 2010 the series will be axed. Whilst there is speculation that other television channels may be interested in taking the show on there has been no confirmation of this.

However, according to a recent report the company behind the Big Brother show, Endemol, is thinking of utilising the increased take up of broadband in the UK to take the show online, and with high speed broadband set to be rolled out across the UK over the next few years this could prove to be perfect timing for the show to become internet based rather than television based.

An official from Endemol stated: “Big Brother has revolutionised television in many ways, and we need to think about how to revolutionise the internet.”
