East Yorkshire to get faster broadband by summer

Jan 6 2012 / By Hazel Chua

The year 2012 marks an exciting year for the UK broadband industry. More upgrades and deployments have been scheduled for the year in line with the government’s Broadband Delivery UK program. Under the BDUK, the government hopes to provide universal broadband access of at least 2Mbps to the entire country. Aside from that, it is also pushing to bring next-generation broadband services to at least ninety percent of the UK.

BT Broadband is one of the Internet service providers that has been very aggressive with their fibre deployments and roll-outs. The firm launched and announced their Fibre-to-the-Premises services last year, with the roll-outs set for completion on 2015. Because of an accelerated schedule, BT followed up with an announcement that their fibre deployment would be done by 2014.

Now users in East Yorkshire will be pleased to know that their broadband connections will be upgraded to provide faster speeds by this summer. Over 28,000 households and establishments will be able to benefit from BT’s upgrade.

Driffield, Hornsea, Withernsea, Keyingham, Market Weighton, Pocklington and Snaith are the areas which will be rolled-out with superfast access. This comes after the Country Land And Business Association launched a campaign to push for faster broadband in rural areas.

IT and social media expert John Popham, who joined the campaign, welcomed the news warmly: “We welcome the latest announcement from BT, which is good news in the short-term.But by the time the work has been completed in summer, people will be pushing for even faster speeds, which can be achieved using fibre optic cable. Everyone is entitled to good broadband connections, but, unfortunately in some rural areas, that is still not possible for some homes and businesses.”

He also added that BT should go on with their roll-outs to provide faster broadband to other areas: “I believe passionately in the power of the Internet to transform people’s lives for the better and I want to make sure those who live in remote communities don’t miss out.”

John Anderson, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber region, commented: “Nobody is doing more than BT to roll out faster broadband across the East Riding. At a time of economic uncertainty, these major improvements will provide a big boost for local businesses and offer many additional educational and entertainment opportunities for local households. We want to go even further by working with the public sector to find ways of bringing faster broadband to areas which are geographically and commercially more challenging.”
