Apr 4 2011 / By Jo Wilkes

It has been reported that councils in Somerset and Devon have come together to bid for funding in order to bring improved broadband services to consumers and businesses in these areas.

According to recent reports officials from Devon and Somerset councils have come together in order to bid for funding so that they can provide improved broadband services to residents and businesses in these areas. The councils will be bidding for millions of pounds in order to bring better quality broadband to their areas.

The councils have also said that they will be setting aside ten million pounds to underpin the bid, which is considered extremely important in order to benefit both homes and businesses in the areas. Officials believe that if successful the project could help individuals and companies but could also boost the local economies in the areas.

Sheila Wheeler, Chief Executive of Somerset County Council, stated: “Having had conversations with business leaders in Somerset over the past few months, I know that superfast and reliable broadband is top of your wish-list, and will prove a huge boost for the local economy.”

She also appealed for support in the quest for funding, adding: “We need your help to convince central government of the importance to Somerset [and Devon] of superfast broadband, and hope that businesses will complete the survey, giving your support to our bid, at www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk. In addition, if you are currently thinking of moving your business out of Somerset due to the present state of the broadband network in the county, we would be interested in hearing from you.”
