Developers do not see piracy by broadband users as major threat
A recent survey that was carried out has shown that the majority of developers do see online piracy amongst broadband users as a rising problem but do not consider it to be a major threat.
Many industry groups have acknowledged that online piracy amongst broadband users has become a rising problem, and the topic of online piracy has caused a lot of controversy recently, with everyone from the entertainment industry and the government to consumers, Internet Providers, and campaign groups getting involved in the row.
A recent survey has shown that around fifty percent of UK developers are now looking at utilising different practices to try and combat online piracy. However, despite this there are only around ten percent of developers that actually feel that online piracy is a serious threat to them. Only twenty percent of respondents to the survey thought that online piracy was a medium threat to their business.
The results of the survey showed that around ninety percent of developers thought that online piracy was a growing problem. However, around sixty percent said that they still did not see online piracy as a major issue. Seventy five percent of distributors were looking at alternative practices such as subscription based services, digital distribution, and working alongside publishers to try and combat the problem.
One official involved in the survey said: “The results of the TIGA piracy survey clearly demonstrate that UK developers are taking the initiative when dealing with the issue of piracy and looking for new ways of delivering content and communicating directly with their consumers. Developers are not complacent in dealing with this problem and are mostly seeking to find solutions for themselves rather than simply relying on the Government to solve the problem of piracy.”
