Music mogul and talent show king Simon Cowell has recently joined in the debate over anti-piracy plans, stating that plans to tackle illegal downloading need to be pushed through as quickly as possible.

Over the past couple of years illegal downloading and file sharing amongst broadband users in the UK has become a huge issue that has drawn many industry groups, consumers, Internet service providers, government officials, and even celebrities into fierce debate. It now seems that music mogul and talent show king Simon Cowell has found time in his schedule to join in the debate and wants plans to tackle piracy to be pushed through as quickly as possible.

According to reports Cowell is urging MPs to push through plans to tackle online piracy as a matter of urgency. He has put his name to a letter along with a number of other big names from the world of literature and entertainment including the author Terry Pratchett. The letter was being passed on to the House of Lords earlier this week and urged prompt action on the passing of anti-piracy regulations.

The letter claimed that the controversial Digital Economy Bill “will ensure that British creators, entertainment companies and the 1.8 million people who work in and around the cultural sector are respected and rewarded in the future as they have been in the past, and that they are fairly paid when they put their work online.” The letter was aimed at getting the Bill prioritised on the government’s agenda.

The letter also stated: “Digital entertainment services are really beginning to take off: fans have never had so much choice as to how to enjoy their music, books, TV and films online. But for these new business models to develop, it is critical that more is done to prevent the illegal services providing easy access to free content.”
