Could Labour broadband plans affect remote working?

Mar 25 2010 / By Rob Webber

With the Labour government having put an increasing amount of focus on its broadband plans for the UK recently there is now increased speculation over the positive effects these plans may have on remote working.

With the election coming up the Labour party has been paying special attention to focussing on the future of broadband under the Labour government and the improvements that it will be making if the party stays in power. Many people are now wondering about the positive effects that these measures could have for businesses when it comes to home working or remote working.

For many businesses and their employees being able to work remotely or from home is vital, but many are unable to benefit from this flexibility because of the speed of broadband services and networks or lack of broadband access altogether. This can cause problems for the workers as well as the businesses, and can affect the ability of some people to even fit work around their family commitments.

However, with the Labour party promising both universal broadband access, even in remote areas, and higher speed broadband services this is something that could change, giving workers and companies a greater degree of flexibility and convenience, enabling those with families to fir their work around their commitments, and even helping to reduce congestion on the roads caused by people travelling to and from the workplace.

Industry officials have said that remote and home working can provide workers with many benefits, allowing them to spend less time travelling and more time with family. Gordon Brown has also commented on the creation of jobs that the party’s broadband plans could result in, stating: “I want Britain to be the world leader in the digital economy, which will create over a quarter of a million skilled jobs.”
