Continued fall in global broadband service prices

It has been claimed in a recent report that the cost of broadband services on a global basis are continuing to fall, enabling more households to access broadband and enjoy the benefits that these services offer.

Whilst a decade ago most households that had Internet access relied on dial up services, there are now many households and businesses that are using broadband and would struggle to manage without it. One of the reasons behind the increased take up of broadband has been the affordability factor, which has enabled more and more households to benefit from what broadband services have to offer.

According to one recent report the cost of broadband services across the globe is continuing to fall, which is great news for consumers and businesses as it means that more people will be able to enjoy affordable access to these services. The study was carried out by Point Topic, and the data showed that the price per MB for broadband on DSL and cable dropped by up to thirty percent globally in 2009.

The data also showed, however, that there was a general increase in the cost of fibre optic broadband services over the course of 2009, with the global price of this technology said to have increased by just over two percent on average. However, officials have said that this is largely because this is a new form of broadband technology and that it still offers very good value for money given the benefits that come with fibre based broadband.

One official that was involved with the research stated that continued global competition amongst broadband providers had helped to drive down costs, stating: “Competition between operators and across the technologies is continuing the downward pressure on DSL and cable pricing per megabit. Fibre however doesn’t have to work quite so hard.”
