Consumers see broadband as a necessity not a luxury

The results of a recent survey have shown that many consumers in the UK now view broadband as a necessity and not a luxury

In the past having a computer was a real luxury, and when the Internet exploded onto the scene having Internet access, and later broadband Internet access, was seen as a luxury. However, according to the results of a recent poll many UK consumers now see broadband access as a necessity rather than a luxury.
The poll was recently carried out by YouGov, and showed that despite the global credit crunch and the financial strains that are facing many households, a large number of consumers saw having access to the Internet via broadband as important as other basic necessities.

The results of the survey found that many consumers would be prepared to give up other luxuries rather than have to get rid of their broadband due to financial constraints, and according to recent figures around ninety two percent of Brits would do whatever they had to in order to keep their Internet access, with around fifty eight percent wanting to remain with their existing Internet Service Provider.

The reason why many households may now consider Internet access to be a necessity rather than a luxury is because broadband is used for so many purposes these days. Some use it to enable their kids to do their homework and research, and some people use it to conduct work, thus making a living from their Internet access.

The recent survey showed that twelve percent of people would rather stop going to the cinema than give up access to the Internet, fourteen percent would stop eating out or ordering takeaways, and thirty percent would prefer to give up drinking and smoking than lose their Internet access.
