Community groups in Norwich win laptops and broadband

Mar 15 2010 / By Rob Webber

It has been reported that a number of community groups in the Norwich area have won laptops and a year’s worth of free broadband access courtesy of communications giant BT.

For community groups across the country having access to computers and broadband services has become increasingly important over recent years, but many of these groups struggle to get funding for things such as this which means that those running the groups, participants and volunteers, and the community as a whole suffer.

However, there has been some good news for a number of community groups and projects in the Norwich area, who will not have to worry about trying to raise money to be able to provide these services for the moment. This is because a number of groups have managed to secure not only laptops for their use but also an impressive year’s worth of free broadband.

Applications to win the laptops and broadband access were invited from local community groups by the communications giant BT, which had a panel of judges on hand to assess the various applications that were submitted. The decision on which groups would win the laptops and broadband access from BT was made based on a number of factors including how the community groups would use the laptops and broadband access to try and help people in the local community to get online.

The awards of laptops and broadband access were made by BT as part of its BT Community Connections scheme. Amongst the community groups that won broadband access and laptops in the area were Norfolk Homemakers Furniture Project in Norwich, Eastern Counties Rugby Union, and Stew gallery and artist studio on Fishergate.
