Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has spoken out on a UK networking site for students stating that the Digital Economy Bill needs to be repealed and should never have been rushed through in the first place.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, has enjoyed a very successful week, and whilst many people did not even know who he was just weeks ago he has now captured the attention and potentially the vote of many of those that saw him in the recent unprecedented election debate with Tory Leader David Cameron and Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Polls showed that of the three party leaders that took part in the debate Clegg was the one that topped the polls with millions of viewers. The Lib Dem leader is now trying to win the vote of students with his insistence that the Digital Economy Bill should be repealed and that it should never have been rushed through in the first place.

Addressing students in a Q&A session on a student networking site after the election debate Clegg said: “We did our best to prevent the Digital Economy Bill being rushed through at the last moment. It badly needed more debate and amendment, and we are extremely worried that it will now lead to completely innocent people having their internet connections cut off.”

He added that not enough debate had taken place over the controversial Bill, and that it needed to be repealed and readdressed. He told students: “It was far too heavily weighted in favour of the big corporations and those who are worried about too much information becoming available. It badly needs to be repealed, and the issues revisited.”
