Communications minister, Lord Carter, is set to release his long awaited Digital Britain Report, which has been eagerly awaited by many in the broadband industry.

This week will see the Communications Minister, Lord Carter, release his long awaited Digital Britain Report, which many officials within the broadband industry will have been keenly awaiting for many months. The report will allow the industry to see the funding plans that the government has laid out to provide broadband for all, and will also provide details on the government’s views on a number of Internet and broadband issues, such as illegal file sharing, broadband supply, and downturns in advertising.

Many people within the broadband industry will be very interested to see how much money from the public purse is being allocated towards broadband related projects in order to bring the government’s aims of broadband for all to fruition. In his interim report in January of this year Lord Carter said that the government wanted to make broadband access of at least 2Mbps available to the whole country by 2012 through a combination of fixed line and wireless broadband connections.

Lord Carter, who has recently announced that he is leaving the government later this year, has been working hard on the project, working with BT with regards to the rollout of coverage for the whole country, as well as dealing with mobile broadband operators with regards to their shares of the spectrum. The report that Carter releases this week will most likely provide information on whether public funding is available and if so how much this is likely to be.

Lord Carter is also expected to address problems that have arisen over online piracy, which have become a big issue over recent years. He said in his interim report that he wanted to bring in legislation to deal with this issue, but the broadband industry has said that stronger measures are needed.
