Brownfield site to get UK's fastest broadband

According to a recent report a Brownfield site in Gateshead that is set aside for development will soon have access to the UK’s fastest broadband.

A recent report has claimed that a Brownfield site in Gateshead is set to get access to the fastest broadband in the UK. The site has been set aside for a housing development, and was formerly where the Freightline depot used to be, just outside of Gateshead town centre.

An ultra high speed communication service is currently being developed by Gateshead Technology Innovations, and plans are underway to connect the Brownfield site to this ultra fast service. This means that those that live in the newly developed homes on the site will be able to enjoy direct access to superfast broadband via a fibre-optic network, which could provide access to speeds of 100Mbps.

The ultra fast broadband network is being developed for the nearby Baltic Business Quarter, and officials have realised that the development site can be connected to that same network simply through running fibre-optic cabling under the A184 Felling bypass.

Mick Henry from Gateshead Council said: “Baltic Business Quarter is developing the best communications infrastructure available anywhere in the UK today. The system was designed specifically to attract major employers and high-quality creative jobs to Gateshead.”

He added: “However, we believe it would be relatively simple to extend this system into neighbouring areas – and offer householders the potential to access some of the fastest and most powerful broadband in the world. This is an exciting new development which could completely transform housing potential in this area and turn the Freightliner site into one of the most sought-after locations in the region.”
