Broadband users warned about excessive downloads this Christmas
With the Christmas holidays almost upon us many broadband users may be planning to watch more television online this year, but they are being urged to be mindful that they do not exceed their fair usage download limits.
It has been reported that watching television online has become increasingly popular recently, with more and more people making the most of their affordable access to broadband services at higher speeds. Over the festive season, with many people watching Christmas specials and being off work or college, the number of people watching more television online is expected to increase.
One industry group is warning, however, that whilst there is nothing wrong with consumers making the most of their broadband service to watch more television online they need to be very careful that they do not inadvertently exceed any fair usage policy that is in place with regards to their download limits. Those that do exceed the limit could find themselves being hit with a shock penalty that they will not have been expecting.
With BBC iPlayer and other on demand services giving consumers more choice and flexibility consumers are increasingly turning to their broadband service to watch their favourite shows. However, many are not aware of their download limits or whether there is a fair usage policy in place, and this puts them in danger of exceeding the download limit or fair usage policy and being fined.
An official from the group said: “With the whole family at home and using online services this Christmas, we strongly urge broadband customers to start monitoring their levels of downloading – otherwise they could end up paying out for more than just presents this festive season.”
