It has been revealed recently that Google may be considering offering movie rentals through its YouTube facility, and some industry experts have said that this could prove to be good news for broadband users.

Broadband availability, access, and speeds, which have all improved over recent years, have changed the way in which many consumers watch their favourite television shows and programmes. It has recently been announced that Google may be providing broadband users with a new way in which to enjoy rental movies, and some industry experts have said that this could really benefit consumers.

It was recently announced that Google was in discussions with a number of movie studios with a view to offering movie rentals to consumers via its YouTube facility, and amongst the studios with which the web company is said to have entered into discussions are Lion’s Gate Entertainment and Sony Pictures.

An official from the British Film Institute claims that this could be an effective way for studios to try and reduce the level of piracy amongst broadband users, and said that it could also prove beneficial for movie fans. He stated: “The film industry needs to look at every solution and opportunity to beat the pirates so exploring this route to market has to be a good thing.”

He did add that watching movies online would probably not take over from other viewing formats in the near future, stating: “At the end of the day, if consumers can access the films they want in a way that suits them and which offers value for money, then they will go for it. People want to see films in so many different ways and on different platforms.”
