Broadband technology allows many in Wales to work from home

It has been shown that advanced technology such as broadband access has changed the way that many people across the UK work, and has allowed many people – particularly in Wales – to work from home or away from the office.

Recently released data has shown that with the technology that people have at their fingertips many workers are now enjoying the convenience, flexibility, and ease of doing their work from home or at a location away from the office base. The figures showed that the highest percentage of workers that were doing their work at home or away from the office was in Wales.

A study was carried out amongst four thousand British workers to get an idea of their working habits and environments. It showed that with technology such as mobile broadband and higher speed broadband many workers were able to carry out their duties from the home rather than going to the office, or whilst they were out and about away from the office.

Wales was found to have nearly thirty percent of workers that said they were able to work away from the office environment, either at home or elsewhere. In the rest of Britain the percentage stood at twenty three percent, which means that Wales has the highest concentration of workers that work away from the traditional office environment.

One official said: “For a lot of people the nine to five no longer exists and bosses are realising the positives of working from home more and more. The plus points of remote working are that it allows employees to set their own hours and structure their own days. This is a good thing for the work-life balance, and is something that firms have become very interested in. Although there are negatives like not knowing when to switch off from the working day, working remotely can be especially important for wellbeing and in some cases, can have a positive impact on stress levels, too.”
