Broadband take up being driven by pensioners

Dec 10 2010 / By Richard Patterson

It has been reported that the take up of broadband in the UK is being driven by pensioners, with this being reflected in figures that have been released by Ofcom.

According to recent figures released by the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, silver surfers are driving the take up of broadband in the UK, with many older consumers getting online. The figures were released in a recent comprehensive overview of the telecoms industry, which showed that as more and more older people started getting online the figures relating to broadband take up increased.

From 2009 the take up of broadband in the UK grew by three percent according to the Ofcom figures. However, in terms of broadband take up amongst those aged between sixty five and seventy four years the increase in broadband take up was three times this level, growing by an impressive nine percent. Amongst those aged over seventy five years the level of take up increased by eight percent.

This year also saw a drop in the level of complaints relating to broadband providers, and this suggests that things are going well in the sector. However, although complaints are said to have fallen by around twenty percent to around one hundred thousand, the level of dissatisfaction with speed and complaint resolutions appeared to have increased.

Dissatisfaction with broadband speeds has increased from fourteen percent in 2009 to nineteen percent in 2010. Ofcom also said that providers were failing to deal with complaints well, and were often giving out incorrect information to consumers when faced with an enquiry.
