Broadband switching plans could take some time to implement

UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has recently outlined plans to make it easier for broadband users to switch providers, but one industry expert has said that whilst this is a good idea it could take time to implement.

It was recently announced by the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, that it was planning to put new standards and guidelines in place to help make it easier for broadband users in the UK to switch their broadband providers, as many were failing to switch and get better value for money on their broadband service because of the inconvenience involved.

One industry official has recently stated that the plans to make broadband switching easier and quicker for consumers is a good idea, but said that it could take some time for the plans and procedures to be fully implemented. It was revealed recently that around forty five percent of consumers were put off from switching broadband simply because they did not want the hassle and inconvenience attached.

Under the new plans that have been proposed by the regulator it would be the potential new providers that would do all of the work on behalf of the customer in order to get the information required and get the switch made more quickly. Industry official, Matt Egan, said that this would most likely make things a little easier for consumers that wanted to switch.

However, he said that the system needed to be up and running first before consumers started to switch with more confidence and regularity, stating: “Currently most users perceive that it’s a bit of a pain … to switch providers. But I think if it succeeds in making it much easier to switch we will probably see more movement.”
