Broadband speeds in Guernsey to double

Jan 10 2011 / By William Harvey

It has been reported that as of this week the speed of broadband connections in Guernsey is set to double from up to 4Mbps to up to 8 Mbps.

Residents and businesses in Guernsey will enjoy a welcome boost to their broadband speeds from this week, which marks the doubling of the broadband speed that can be received across the area. For the many people that may have struggled with their broadband speeds the boost in speed will provide real benefits.

The speed boost will occur as a result of Cable and Wireless upgrading services to boost speeds from up to 4Mbps to up to 8Mbps, which means that some businesses and residents will be able to receive speeds that are double those that they receive at present.

A number of factors are likely to affect the actual speeds that people and businesses receive, such as their distance from the exchange, the number of people or level of congestion when they are using their broadband, etc. The upgrade will not cost anything for those buying their service from Cable and Wireless.

Whilst the increased speed will also be able through other Internet service providers operating in the area customers of other ISPs may have to pay extra for the higher speeds, and this is something that will be decided by individual ISPs.

For the many people that have become increasingly reliant on broadband, as so many people have these days, the increased speeds will make it easier and more convenient to carry out all sorts of activities from browsing and entertainment to research and business.
