Broadband proving popular amongst older consumers News

Broadband proving popular amongst older consumers

August 5th, 2007 by Richard

Older consumers in the UK are taking full advantage of Broadband, spending more time online than many younger surfers

Increased accessibility and affordability of broadband services has seen this type of service become hugely popular amongst older consumers over recent years, and according to a recent report those aged sixty five and over are now spending more time online than younger consumers. The report suggests that the over sixty fives age group is spending an average of forty two hours per week online, whereas the amount of time spent online by younger surfers aged between eighteen and twenty four averages about thirty eight hours per week.

Those aged sixty five and over account for nearly ten percent of all time spent surfing online in the UK. There are a number of different types of sites that are proving particularly popular amongst this age group, such as finance sites, news sites, leisure sites, and others. Another independent report has also shown that online banking amongst the older generation has rocketed in popularity with the increased availability and affordability of broadband, with a rise of 350% in online banking amongst the over 55s between 2001 and 2006.

The recent figures were released in a report from the communications regulator Ofcom. The figures show that although a lower number of people aged sixty five and over use the Internet compared to younger surfers, those that do use it tend to spend more time on there than their younger counterparts. This is partly due to the fact that those aged sixty five and over are often retired and therefore have more time available to surf the Internet than younger people that have to go to college or work.

Around twenty five percent of Internet users in the UK are now aged over fifty according to reports, and in particular men seem to be enjoying the benefits of the Internet in the over sixty five age group, with eighty percent of surfers in this age group being male. In contrast, the majority of users in the twenty five to forty nine age bracket are female, often using sites such as shopping sites, childcare sites, educational sites, and holiday or leisure sites.
