Broadband divide in the north and south of the UK shown by recent research
The penetration of broadband services in the UK has been seen to have a significant divide between the north and the south of the country according to recent research from Point Topic.
In terms of broadband penetration it has been found that the UK currently had vast north-south divide in levels of penetration say Point Topic which has found that a high penetration level is enjoyed by 68 cities throughout the UK.
It has, however, been discovered that if a line were to be drawn from the Bristol channel to the Wash only three of these cities would be either west or north of this line.
It was found that a broadband penetration of 32.9 percent was enjoyed by London, The east of England, the south-east and the south-west while a lower figure of just 26.1 percent was shown by a total of eight other regions throughout the UK.
The report from Point Topic advised “The picture supports the view of Britain as divided between the world metropolis of London, whose tentacles spread widely across the south of England, and a ‘provincial archipelago’ of smaller centres struggling to survive against the competition of the giant to the south.”
An important role in the provision of network access through next generation technology throughout the country is to be played by Fibre-to-the-premises services according to another study that was recently released by Point Topic.
The findings have also been backed up by two of the largest broadband network operators in the UK, Virgin Media and BT who have made promises of carrying out a number of significant upgrades to their network over the next few years, which will include the rollout of Fibre-to-cabinet to a large proportion of the country.
