Speed is of the utmost importance to many of the people and businesses that sign up for broadband services, so many will be pleased to know that average broadband speeds in 2009 increased by twenty two percent.

For many people signing up to a suitable broadband service involves ensuring that they are able to get adequate speeds from their service, as otherwise users can be very restricted in what they can do. With this in mind broadband providers have been striving to provide the best speeds possible to as many customers as possible, enabling consumers to enjoy greater choice when it comes to getting a high quality broadband service with adequate speeds.

With the importance of speed in mind many businesses and consumers will be pleased to learn that the average broadband speeds in the UK increased by twenty two percent over the course of 2009, with different broadband providers boosting their broadband speeds by different levels. BT, for example, upped its speed by twenty four percent, and Virgin Media speeds increased by twenty two percent.

The figures have been released by a broadband group, and one official from the group stated: “At the start of the year the average broadband speed test UK-wide was 3.667mbps. At the end of the year this had grown to an average speed of 4.478mbps, a rise of 22%. The providers that show stagnation are those which have not rolled out new, higher-speed products during the past year, so we will watch with interest as to how they respond to competition over the course of 2010.”

Consumers have been reminded that the actual speed that they receive with their broadband service will depend on a number of factors, such as their proximity from the local exchange and the time of day that they use the Internet, and experts recommend carrying out online speed tests at different times of the day to get a better idea of the actual speeds being received.
