Amazon Web Services’ Direct Connect technology lands in the UK

Amazon is the largest online retailer of goods from every department imaginable. Aside from selling retail goods, the company has already expanded to producing their own line of eBook readers and tablets. Moreover, they have also launched their own cloud-based services as well.

Now the firm has announced that its Web Services division has now brought Direct Connect technology to the UK.

Amazon Web ServicesDirect Connect is a service that will allow users to establish dedicated connections in their networks between Amazon’s local web service facility to their respective data centres. UK users can then connect to Amazon Web Services’ EU West region through the Telecity Sovereign House datacentre in London. New Direct Connect points have also been established from Equinix in Tokyo and Singapore and from Coresite One in Los Angeles.

Amazon stated: “Using AWS Direct Connect, you can establish private connectivity between AWS and your datacenter, office, or colocation environment, which in many cases can reduce your network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than internet-based connections.”

Amazon added that the service is best suited for customers who want to move large amounts of data to and from the Amazon cloud servers at a rate and with a connection that is more reliable than what the public Internet can provide. Customers can establish the connections themselves if they possess the technology know-how in making their own connections directly to the Direct Connect data centres. Otherwise, these users can instead opt to avail of transit providers that include Abovenet, Global Telecom Technology, IX Reach, Level 3 Communications, Smart 421 or TelecityGroup.

More Direct Connect locations are currently being planned for this year.
