According to a recent report the amount of money being spent on advertising via the Internet has overtaken the money being spent on advertising via television for the first time.

With the rising number of consumers that now regularly use fixed line and mobile broadband the Internet has become a viable advertising platform for many companies these days, and the increasing popularity as the Internet as an effective advertising medium has been reflected in recent data that shows the current trend in advertising.

According to reports the spend on online advertising in the UK has overtaken that of television advertising, and this is the first time that this has happened. In the first half of this year spending on Internet advertising increased by over four and a half percent. However, the wide advertising sector actually fell by around seventeen percent.

This now makes the Internet the biggest advertising platform in the country, putting it ahead of television advertising. The data comes from a report from the Internet Advertising Bureau, which showed that Internet advertising spending has soared to around £1.75 billion. The report is released twice a year. Internet advertising now accounts for twenty three and a half percent of all advertising spending according to the report.

Officials believe that next year will see further growth in Internet advertising, and the following year will see even greater growth. One official said: “This is a significant milestone. This is the first major market where online has overtaken television to become the biggest single medium.”

Another official added: “Perhaps surprisingly, a slowing economy has accelerated the migration to digital technology. Hence the continuing shift from more traditional forms of advertising to online, which promises return on investment and measurability in a period of instability.”
