10Mbps broadband to come to Cumbria
It has been reported that a new scheme relating to the government’s universal broadband program is set to provide Cumbria with 10Mbps universal broadband.

According to a recent report Cumbria is set to benefit from 10Mbps universal broadband by 2015, and this will come from a scheme that has been set up on the back of the government promise of universal broadband by 2015. All residents and businesses in the Cumbria area should have access to 10Mbps broadband by 2015 as part of the Accessible Cumbria scheme.
As part of the scheme authorities will be seeking contracts from Internet service providers in the UK early next year. The county will be able to claim subsidies of up to twenty million dollars as part of government plans, which can then be used to use the service of leading providers for the rollout, including BT and Virgin Media.
One council official from the area said that it was necessary for faster broadband speeds to be launched because businesses in the area needed them in order for online transactions to be made. Residents in the area will also benefit from the faster broadband speeds. The broadband rollout is set to begin by the end of next year, and will be welcomed by residents and businesses throughout Cumbria.
Marie Fallon, Director of Environment of the Cumbria County Council, said: “It’s essential to the Cumbrian economy that we support communities that want superfast broadband to do business and also support those who currently cannot get connected at all.”

Likewise. I’m lucky to get 0.5Mbs tops. The main problem I see is that there are a large number of people who live ‘outside’ village boundaries, and maybe some distance by road. How will they be catered for?
About time too, I can’t even get 1Mbs broadband where I am and mobile broadband has no coverage.
