‘Up to’ packages could disappear due to advertising rules

It has been claimed that the ‘up to’ broadband packages that are advertised by many Internet service providers could disappear due to changes in broadband advertising regulations.

For some years Internet providers have been advertising their broadband plans with ‘up to’ speeds, making the packages look very impressive to customers. However, this has sparked a lot of controversy namely because most of the people that then sign up to the plan do not get anywhere near the up to or maximum speed that was used for the headline advertising in order to pull in more custom.

Following a lot of controversy and much concern being expressed over this method of advertising broadband speeds the UK’s advertising watching, the Advertising Standards Authority, has decided to step in. The agency will be launching a public consultation into advertising by broadband providers, and it appears that this could result in new regulations being brought in.

If this does happen it could put an end to the ‘up to’ packages that are currently used to advertise broadband plans by many providers. Many believe that getting rid of this form of advertising will give greater clarity to broadband customers, and will mean that they are not misled over speeds, which some officials believe is what is happening at the moment.
