New technology could stop exaggerated claims to speed in the mobile broadband industry

New speed predicting technology that could put a stop to unrealistic advertising in the mobile broadband industry is now available for UK vendors to employ, says comparison site Broadband Expert (www.broadband-expert.co.uk).

Software from Scandinavian company CellVision is able to put an end to the grossly inflated claims about mobile broadband speeds made by UK mobile broadband companies by taking a range of network data, device capabilities and radio conditions to give a more accurate prediction.

The technology is already being used in Sweden by mobile broadband provider Telia, which now offers Scandinavian consumers a speed map that gives them the opportunity to see realistic minimum and maximum mobile broadband speeds anywhere in the country. CellVision is currently in the process of talking to the UK mobile broadband service providers about its technology so that UK consumers may also benefit from receiving the same level of transparency before they commit to a network.

Rob Webber, commercial director of Broadband Expert says: “The fact that this technology is now readily available for UK mobile broadband providers to offer as a service to consumers before they buy is great news. We recently revealed that consumers were receiving only a quarter of the advertised speeds from the likes of Vodafone, 3, Orange and T-Mobile; all of which currently base their claims on theoretical maximums that they openly admit are largely unachievable. This is because measurements have shown that an area that can theoretically achieve 14.4Mb/s can be as low as 0.35Mb/s.

“We are now in a position to move on from the habit of unrealistic advertising in the mobile broadband industry, and hope that the take up of CellVison’s technology among the UK vendors will be high.”
