Be trialling 40MB technology

October 8th, 2008 by Rob

According to a recent report broadband provider Be is looking for participants for a trial into technology that could offer 40Mb in terms of speed.

Be Broadband has already been hailed as offering high broadband speeds compared to many other providers. A recent report claims that the provider is now looking for participants to take part in a new line-bonding experiment that could see users achieve speeds of up to 40Mb.

The way that the technology works is to combine two telephone lines via one ADSL2 router, which means that your broadband connection will have the power of two telephone lines. Officials from Be say that the actual speed that you will achieve will be based on what you get now. One official said “if you get 10Mb now then during the trial you could get an average speed of 20Mb.” The length and quality of the lines used will also determine what sort of speeds can be achieved by individual users.

Those participating in the trial will get their trial period for free, as well as paying nothing for the following month’s subscription. The two lines used for the trial will also be offered free of charge for twelve months. One industry official said: “This is a great offer from Be, saving customers money on their subscription at the same time as temporarily increasing their download speeds.”

He added: “However, customers should be aware that second lines do not usually have the same quality as the first line that’s installed in a home so speeds are unlikely to double and in the long term it’s doubtful that broadband customers would be willing to pay rental costs on two lines for the added speed. However, this is still an interesting trail and I am keen to see the results.”
