4G spectrum: eBay speaks out for mobile broadband shopping

Online retail marketplace eBay has recently spoken out about the losses that many online retailers are experiencing due to problems that consumers face with mobile broadband.

Over recent years online shopping has become the norm for a huge number of consumers in the UK, with many using the Internet to buy everything from clothes and entertainment to weekly groceries, clothes, and more. For retailers this is great news, as the Internet has given them a very effective platform from which to increase their revenue significantly and develop a global customer base.

It is not just people with fixed line broadband that are engaging in online shopping. Many people with mobile broadband services are also interested in the choice, quality, and value for money that they are able to get online. However, some industry groups believe that because of problems with coverage and cost of mobile data many consumers are giving up on online shopping via mobile broadband resulting in retailers losing out on huge sums of money.

Officials from the global online marketplace, eBay, spoke recently about the 4G spectrum auction that is set to take place next year. The company said that part of the spectrum from this 4G auction should be used by the communications regular Ofcom to improve competition between mobile operators so that consumers could get a more affordable service with better coverage.

The company claims that slow speeds, coverage issues, and cost of mobile data could be costing businesses an estimated £1.3 billion a year in revenues, as this could otherwise be generated by consumers shopping via mobiles.
