Claims that mobile broadband is currently rubbish

Following recent reports from a number of experts that mobile broadband is failing the meet the needs of many of its users, 3 UK has fought back saying that with the approach of universal broadband promised by the government mobile broadband would be viable as an alternative to fixed-line broadband in some areas.

Mobile operator, 3 UK has recently hit back at critics that are reporting on the failing of mobile broadband services on the whole, saying that mobile broadband could easily replace fixed-line broadband connection in many parts of the UK.

Certain parts of the UK where there is either poor quality or no broadband services at all could easily be covered by investing a small amount of money into mobile broadband technology according to the director of technical solutions at 3 UK, Phil Sheppard.

According to claims from Phil Sheppard all that is required is for more of the broadcast spectrum to be opened up to mobile operators by the government, which is an opinion that is currently mirrored by a number of other mobile broadband UK providers. This would allow areas of the country that are currently unable to access the internet through fixed-line broadband services to receive far more stable wireless broadband services.

In a recent report Phil Sheppard said ‘Mobile broadband tends to be capable, and commercially capable, of providing the 2Mbps broadband universal service commitment and is an extremely efficient way of doing it. It’s very cost effective, it actually doesn’t need government funding, what it needs is access to spectrum, that’s the key thing.’

These claims, however, are something that many experts don’t agree with due to the fact that speeds of 2Mbps are not being reached through mobile broadband even in areas of the country that currently have full coverage and all these claims will achieve is to give many users who are receiving poor quality broadband access more of the same through mobile broadband.
