O2 makes plans to boost 3G coverage

November 20th, 2009 by Richard

Mobile communications giant O2 has recently announced that it has made plans that will enable it to boost its 3G coverage across the UK.

Mobile broadband has become increasingly popular over the past couple of years, with many consumers opting for this service because of the freedom and convenience that it offers to those that need to access the Internet whilst out and about. However, there are a couple of downsides to mobile broadband compared to fixed line broadband, and one of these problems can be the level of coverage.

However, one mobile communications giant has made plans to try and boost its 3G coverage in the UK. Officials from O2 have confirmed that by the end of next year it will be either building or upgrading fifteen hundred base station sites across the UK, which will then allow for greater coverage and will provide users with a more reliable mobile broadband service.

The project is likely to cost hundreds of millions of pounds according to reports. The network provider has stated that whilst some areas will see new base station sites being built others will see existing 2G base station sites being upgraded and converted to 3G. Over the next year London is set to benefit from two hundred new sites, and forty of these are set to go live by the end of this year.

An official from O2 said: “In the past 12 months the mobile industry has seen an unprecedented change in demand. The introduction of world-class devices, in combination with a wide variety of data applications, has brought about a dramatic change in customer behaviour and created an exponential demand on mobile data networks.”
